Silicon metal is a strategic high-tech commodity traditionally produced by smelting high-purity silica with carbon (coal, charcoal).  It has applications in the production of photovoltaic cells, computer chips and a range of high-tech products that increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption. The demand for silicon metal is increasing exponentially due to the high-tech and renewable energy applications.

MHM is working to secure offtake contracts for lump silica and silica flour to help underwrite development of a Tasmanian silicon smelter. Considerable effort has been devoted to securing strategic silica reserves suitable for feedstock in the production of silicon metal and high quality glass.

MHM continues to engage expressions of interest for the development of a silicon smelter in Tasmania. Work continues on site selection, power supply agreements and the supply of sufficient timber for the production of charcoal. .

Cape Sorell Silica Project

Cape Sorell is a unique world-class deposit based on its magnitude and purity. The silica displays excellent thermal stability and mechanical strength – critical factors in suitability for producing silicon metal. Comalco (now Rio Tinto Aluminium) previously delineated this as one of four project areas suited to silicon metal production, with strong potential to upgrade both purity and tonnage.
